How Do You Meditate Properly When You Are A Meditation Newbie

?

One of the questions I am asked by people who are thinking of picking meditation is 'how do you meditate properly'. I totally understand where they are coming from because I've been there just a few years ago as well. I've gone through being a complete newbie and through not knowing what to do, how to sit the right way and what to do with all that chit-chatter in my mind.

Meditation is a very easy process - if you are already doing it. But just like with everything else, if you haven't meditated before, it can be quite daunting, confusing and even intimidating.

The first thing I tell my students is that there are several ways to start with meditation and then I give them a quick rundown of a few of the techniques available to them right now. Depending on their emotional makeup and their character, they will start using one technique or the other.

Using Binaural Beats

One of the easiest techniques to learn to meditate properly as a newbie at it is by using binaural beats. Now granted, this is not a pure meditation as we know. However the results are exactly the same as with practicing traditional medtation. The result is achieving an altered state of consciousness which is needed for meditation as well. This state is the one you want to achieve in order to gain all the benefits that you are after, including removing stress from your life, enhancing relaxation and helping you sleep better.

These beats help by giving your brain two different (yet related) set of frequencies - one per ear. This in turn creates an effect on your brain by triggering various responses.

While years ago binaural beats were practically unheard of, these days they are quite popular and well known all over the world. If you don't like to try to calm down your mind by practicing meditation the way Eastern gurus are doing it, then using binaural beats is the best way to go about it.

Very Short Meditation

The so-called one minute meditation technique is perfect for starting this spiritual practice. The good thing about it is that you don't even need to sit down and prepare in order to meditate. You can do this technique at any time during the day. All you need is one minute of your time.

You simply close your eyes, do a tiny bit of mind work and after just a minute or so you're refreshed and at ease with yourself. This is especially great when you experience a lot of stress in your daily life.

Guided Meditation For An Easy Initiation

What I particularly like is the technique called guided meditation. This is what I have actually started with as well a few years back. The process is very easy: you get yourself a tape or guided meditation CD (very cheap to buy these days), sit down in a comfortable position and start listening to the guiding voice.

What I like best about this technique is that you don't have to actually worry about any part of it. The guide is doing all the work for you. All you need is simply listen to his voice.

After a few weeks or months, you might want to start meditating on your own without a guide, however I always find myself going back again and again to my trusted guided CD. It's just one of the easiest ways to relax, let my mind go and de-stress my life.
