How Do You Protect Against Dust Transfer?
Dust transfer can add valuable time on to the end of a job
, whether it is a simple home DIY job or a commercial project. Whatever you're working on you can probably not afford to be spending time on cleaning areas that were not in the plan. On larger commercial projects time penalties are often in place, so there are even more reasons why you do not want to affect the areas of a site you're not responsible for.
It's not only cleaning that can be costly, soft furnishings can be ruined beyond repair by dust transfer and replacing them can be very costly.
Protecting against dust transfer is easy and there are many different types of protection available on the market today:
Plastic Sheeting
This is probably the most common form of protection against dust transfer, the reason for this is that it works extremely well. Recently I've been using a product that allows you to put up a plastic sheet supported by poles and clamps on an extension I was working on. It also had a door for access in the sheeting which I found very handy. I have to say that I was amazed at how little dust came into the house, definitely a must for any building work in the home.
Tacky Mats
I'd not heard of these before I started the extension but one of my friends informed me how good they were. I got one for the entrance to the new kitchen to stop walking in all the dirt. Although this did help with reducing the amount of dirt I walked in, it probably did very little with regards to protecting against dust transfer.
Plastic Door
I used this when I was replacing the bathroom, it's great, especially if it's only a doorway you need to stop dust coming through, it works in a similar way to plastic sheeting but it fits on the doorway and has a zip to allow for access. This has to be one of the best value for money products I've ever bought. It took about a minute to put up, lasted throughout the job and took seconds to remove.
These are some of the best ways you can protect your home against dust transfer. As a builder I'm coming across new dust protection products all the time, so I'll keep you informed of any new products I like.
