When one realizes and accepts that divorce is an inevitable outcome, a defining moment begins. How are you to be defined? Up to this point, has it been by the accomplishments at work or by the winning touchdown scored during high school? Most everyone lives on what has happened in the past. But now, your married chips have run out, and the next hand must be played. Do you want to be known as someone who went all in or folded his hand at the right time with dignity and poise?

During a divorce, one has a new opportunity to retake control of his or her life. Prior to the divorce, one normally relies on the good graces of his or her spouse to share and build a life. But now, it is important to re-prioritize himself or herself as number one. Take inventory of the emotional strengths and weaknesses, not just the physical and material things. Are you strong? Or could you be stronger? The fact is something (your married life) has been taken from you, and it cannot be replaced.

How do you respond and react? Do you respond with anger, passiveness, or by withdrawing? How you react at the most critical points in your life is how you should want to be remembered. Accept the fact that the past is gone and mistakes have been made by both of you. Focus on your future. You should want to be known for the way you handle yourself from this moment on and of the positive energy you provide others. You must regain control of those feelings you have lost along the way. Find them and take them back.
