The very first stage is charging. A corona wire that has a high voltage is used to charge a drum cylindrical in shape which has a coat that is photoconductive. When bright light from the lamp hits the original document, the white spots of the document will reflect the light onto the photoconductive cylindrical drum that will eventually be conductive and later on be discharged to the ground. The negatively charged area of the drum which is unexposed will remain as it is.

Then a latent image will emerge on the surface of the cylindrical drum.

The third phase is developing. When positively charged and applied to the drum, the toner which is the powder used to make images and printed texts on the paper will be attracted and will stick to the negatively charged areas or the black areas.

The next stage is the transfer. A piece of paper which is negatively charged will then absorb the toner texts or images on the drum. The paper has a higher level of charge than the drum. Fusing is the last step. This involves heat and pressure rollers melting the toner and bonding it to the paper.

With the fast advancement in technology nowadays, some predict that these photocopiers will become obsolete eventually. Their thoughts are becoming realistic gradually since other people who are truly intelligent are searching for ways to improve the quality of these older models of copiers. Such machines are known as mono multifunction printers.

These kinds of machines are sometimes referred to as multifunction product, multifunction peripheral, multifunction device, or simply all-in-one. These highly improved printers are able to do tasks of numerous devices. Such tasks are: sending and receiving emails and fax messages, printing, scanning, and photocopying.
