The six tips that enable Apples iBooks to accept ePub files:
* There must be a tag for each file, excluding container.xml and mimetype. Untagged files cause failure.
* In the case of iPad, all files are to be moved to Mac and are given Mac line-endings.
* All files must be UTF-8 or UTF-16 encoded. All encodings must match. Plain ASCII files must not be submitted. Furthermore the encoding methods must not be mixed.
The use of TextWrangler allowed UTF-8 encoding, but they werent prefaced by a multi-byte bill-of-materials. So the files were listed as (no BOM). This is not a serious problem.
ePub file was assembled using the *NIX command line.
* The three commands used are:
zip -X book.epub mimetype
zip -rg book.epub Meta-INF -x *.DS_Store
zip -rg book.epub OEBPS -X *.DS_Store
The preliminary validation doesnt assure the import of the book on the Apple store server-side.
* Even though the files are validated with an EpubCheck site and iTunes Producer, theyre not being tested for everything that Apples system might require. So validation doesnt inevitably mean valid.
*The zip format can handle up to about 4GB. All the XML file references need to be properly URL encoded.
*After removing all entity encodings, change the files to the simplest, lower-case Linux-style formatting. All file references must reveal this.
Final Review
After the package was uploaded to Apple, the package history showed Partial Delivery. A yellow circle means the app is under review. An app never goes into review unless all the pieces have been uploaded. The screen shows both an import date and a cover graphic. The message Pending from the server means Apples reviewing it. Now the books can be downloaded from the iBooks store within two weeks.
Another valid approach is sending the book to an aggregator service company to do the formatting and uploading.
