How Does My Courier Price My Shipment?
When courier companies decide how much to charge you for their services
, there are a few different factors that go into that calculation. Although two different southeast courier companies might end up coming up with completely different quotes if you call them about a particular shipment, the means that they use for coming up with those numbers are going to have some very strong similarities. Most courier companies use standardized methods for pricing their services.
The distance that you're shipping your package is going to clearly be one of the most important parts of the formula that determines how much your shipping is going to cost you. Simply put, the further you're shipping, the more your shipment is going to cost you. Distance represents time in the courier world, and the further you're shipping, the longer the courier company will be using their vehicles and their drivers to complete your delivery. Of course on top of that, the further your shipment is going the more fuel it will consume, and next to drivers' wages, the fuel consumed by courier vehicles is one of the largest expenses which have to be considered in the industry.
The size and the weight of your shipment are going to be the next factors which figure into this type of calculation. Essentially, this is easy enough to understand, because the heavier and the larger your shipment is, the more the courier shipment is going to cost. Typically, the size and weight will be plugged into a formula that will determine a figure called the freight class. This will be used with the distance to assess how much the shipment will actually cost.
There are many other figures which can affect the actual price that you end up paying for shipping. For instance, anything which makes your delivery more difficult in any way to ship is likely to result in a higher overall price on your shipment. A good example of this is a shipment which is oddly shaped or oversized, and requires special care to load.
The last major determinant of how much your shipping is going to cost you is the speed that you want it delivered. The most expensive service is a rush delivery, which means that you need the courier to deliver it as soon as possible. The price will go down from there the more time you are willing to let your shipment take.
