How Does The Telephone Work And How Has The Technology Developed?

Modern telephones have come a long way from Alexander Graham Bells original model

in 1876; though the principles still remain the same, proving that the concept has truly passed the test of time.

We can all remember making telephones out of cups and string when we were younger; when the string was pulled tight the vibrations from one cup would transmit through the string and be amplified through the other. The theory for the actual telephone is not far from this:

The telephone uses a combination of both acoustics and electricity transmitted through wires. Within the mouthpiece there are metallic substances and an electrode separated by a plastic barrier. When we speak into the mouthpiece we provide the acoustics, these vibrations cause the metallic substances to move back and forth. The difference in distance between the electrode and these metallic substances causes the voltage to vary, (this is how a microphone works). These variations in voltage are then transmitted through the wire and reconverted in acoustics at the other end.

Other parts of the phone include the dial tone and ringer. When the handset is removed the current is activated, this then connects with a digit receiver and sends a tone indicating that you are ready to dial. Pushing the buttons activates a tone generator in the phone this then generates dual tone frequencies, which in turn starts the calling process.

The majority of landline phones found today are cordless. These still work on the same principles as the originals however they use technology found in the radio to transmit the signals from the handset to the base of the phone. Removing the wire has provided far more freedom and comfort when talking; it has also eliminated the annoying task of getting up and down to answer the phone. The loudspeaker feature found on modern phones also contributes towards the comfort factor and makes tasks such as waiting on hold, (listening to elevator music), far more endurable.

Moreover caller ID functions allow the user to be connected but not necessarily accessible, whether its a debt collector or a call from the in-laws its never been easier to successfully avoid a call. In addition to this having a telephone that can record messages has solved numerous problems. For example if an important call has been missed due to a difference in working hours, (or something similar), there is always that fail-safe. It is arguable that having a message left is even better than taking the call, if youre like me run the risk of forgetting things you have just been told.
