How Ear Reshaping Surgery Works
Many people all over the world feel that their ears protrude and would like to undergo
an ear shaping surgery (also known as otoplasty) to rectify the problem. If you feel self-conscious about your ears it probably has an impact on your overall self-esteem, making you feel paranoid about what people think of you. This can cause you to feel unhappy or even depressed, so getting the problem sorted could greatly improve your state of mind.
Otoplasty is an incredibly simple procedure but it can really help those that have it. The surgery can be carried out for cosmetic reasons; following trauma that has resulted in misshapen ears or on those with a congenital ear condition that causes part, or even sometimes the entire, ear to be missing.
The procedure is carried out under general anaesthetic, which means that you will be asleep during. There are a few different forms of otoplasty, each generally being used to correct different issues, but one of the most common is the ear pin-back. This can be used to address protruding ears.
This form of ear reshaping involves the surgeon making an incision behind and within the ears. Excess skin and cartilage is removed from the ear to aid in the movement of it, and the surgeon will then suture the ear in its new position. During this procedure you can also have the overall size of your ears reduced, which is a common feature of protruding ears.
Once the surgery is completed you will awake in your hospital bed and will have bandages around your ears. The surgeon will visit you in your room to examine the sutures and answer any last minute questions you may have before you go home.
While at home you should try to sleep on your back to avoid putting pressure on your ears. One week after your surgery you will need to attend a post-operative consultation where your bandages and stitches will be removed. You will now be able to wash your hair and behind your ears, but you should not rub your ears while washing as they are likely to remain tender for a short time. Wearing a sports headband to bed will also help to support and protect your ears, and it is recommended that you do this for at least ten nights.
Following your surgery and recovery period you will instantly notice the difference to your ears, both in your appearance and your increased self-confidence.
