How Effective Is Modafinil In Treating Narcolepsy?
The drug Modafinil has its own place in the treatment of the sleep disorder Narcolepsy
. Narcolepsy is a sleep disorder that results into sudden and uncontrollable episodes of deep sleep. It causes periods of extreme daytime sleepiness and may also result into weakening of muscles. The disorder can interfere with a person's ability to work. A person, who suffers from Narcolepsy, may experience lack of mental alertness and poor performance in day "" day life activities.
Since 1999, there had been a no. of clinical trials, however, the results pointed towards the drug Modafinil for the treatment of excessive daytime sleepiness (Narcolepsy). Antidepressant drugs such as tricyclics and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, on the other hand, are effective drugs for cataplexy syndrome. In fact, the aggression of symptoms resulting from Narcolepsy can be minimized; however, it cannot be completely cured.
Modafinil is a stimulant, a central nervous system stimulant medication (CNS). The medication helps in increasing wakefulness and daytime alertness in people suffering from excessive sleep disorder (Narcolepsy). The drug works by stimulating the brain and spinal cord. It is indicated for the symptomatic relief of excessive sleepiness associated with Narcolepsy. However, the drug will only reduce the symptoms, but will not alleviate them entirely.
The drug Modafinil carries a number of side effects and hence should be taken only on the advice from a registered medical practitioner. A common side effect of the drug is headache; other side effects of the drug include irritability, anxiety, quickened heart rate, hypertension, substance abuse and disturbances in sleep during night. The other possibility is that the person taking the drug may fall addict to it and that may result into long term harmful effects of the drug.
Last but not least, the drug Modafinil may be useful to control the symptoms of the sleep disorder (Narcolepsy), however, it should not be considered as a replacement for sleep and good sleep hygiene.
