How I Survived The Thanksgiving Holiday In A Healthy Manner

Another thanksgiving holiday has passed, a wonderful time to be with family and friends

. It's astonishing how quickly a year flies by, seemingly faster and faster every time around.

Even though there was a table full of all the trimmings you would expect to find at a traditional thanksgiving feast, and the numerous snacking trays sporting tempting calorie packed treats, my restraint this year was astounding! This is the first time I can remember ever keeping my weight loss goal in mind throughout the entire day and I think that truly saved me from a day of consuming 4,000+ calories.

Let me recap my day for you to show how I was able to escape in a semi-healthy manner and have a great time as always.

Our annual trip to Big Bear, Ca was on schedule and even though there hasn't been much snowfall yet, the sky was perfectly clear and the weather a bit chilly, perfect atmosphere for a weekend getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city.

If you read the tips I posted a few days ago to help maintain control during Thanksgiving, I wanted to keep certain healthy practices and habits in mind:

1) Avoid mindless snacking while watching tv or chatting with people

2) Maintain a reasonable portion size during dinner

3) Get some type of exercise (preferably after dinner) to burn some of those calories and to aide the digestive process.

I'm happy to say that while watching the NFL game I did not snack on anything even though I was tempted. Just as I was about to give in to those urges, I thought of subtly asking my mom for a small helping of salad to tide me over until dinner. I followed that up with a large glass of water and the hunger sensation was curbed. Not only did I avoid 600+ calories if I snacked on the potato chips, guacamole, and cheese dip that were all right within my eyesight, I probably would have followed that up with a couple drinks and the downward spiral would have started. I ended up eating a healthy snack and drink to give my body something good to work on

Once I made it to dinner, I wanted to keep in mind to not overdo it during the meal. Naturally I ate a slightly larger portion than I've been regularly eating, since it was Thanksgiving, I figured that's expected to happen.

However I made it a point to include smaller portions of a handful of items, and avoided the few unhealthy options on the table. I also made it a point to drink two large glasses of water during the meal which I know helped keep me from eating additional servings of food.

I was also delighted with the fact that few people wanted to go on a walk/hike about an hour after dinner so burning some of those extra calories was definitely a positive thing. Surprisingly enough, I even went fishing at 5:30 in the morning the day after which was a first since 2009!

What I believe helped make this a healthy success is that I took a moment to think of specific ideas I wanted to make sure to uphold for the day. I set three goals for myself to keep true. I've been doing this regularly over the past few months which has helped me avoid unhealthy choices wherever may turn up in the day.

This can be a struggle when first starting out on a journey to develop healthy habits and get rid of the unhealthy ones in order to lose weight. Stick with a plan even if you do occasionally stray from the path. Learn from those mistakes, those brief setbacks, and move on. This is what you will need to do in order to be successful.

You will be faced with quite a number of choices during any given day, and it's the decisions you make with these choices that will determine how effective you are with weight loss. When you focus on individual choices from the moment you wake until you go to sleep, you will have much better results when you step on the scale each and every week.
