If I had to narrow all the different Internet marketing skills down to one most important one, I think I'd be tempted to list search engine optimization and search engine marketing as the single most important one.

I mean, what other skill allows you to receive a nearly unlimited stream of highly targeted visitors straight to your web site, day in and day out, all for free?

The only problem is that search engine marketing is becoming more and more difficult because the search engines are putting more and more stress on sites getting massive amounts of backlinks. If your site doesn't have a lot of back links, chances are very slim that you will rank high enough to gain any serious traffic.

That's where article marketing comes into play. Not many people think of article marketing as a search engine marketing tool but it is. Why is that? Because if you write an article, you can put an author resource box at the bottom of it containing one or two links to your web site. You can then upload that article to hundreds, if not thousands of article directories.

This gives you instant back links, but it gets better. Most people use article directories to find content for their own web sites, meaning that they will take your article from the directory, and post it on their blog or web site (along with your authors resource box that has the one or two links back to your web site!). The better your article is, the more people will syndicate it on their web site, and the more links you can build.

Whats more, you control what the anchor text is for each of these links, which is an important part of SEO link building.

If done correctly, this can create a tidal wave of back links pointing to your web site all at no cost to you whatsoever (except the cost of your time in writing the article).

What's more, it's pretty easy to outsource article writing fairly inexpensively. For a few hundred dollars you can get someone to write several hundred unique articles that you can upload to the article directories, which can result in thousands of links to your site and massive search engine traffic.

The major search engines don't like web sites who "buy" links from other sites. But this is not about buying links at all, in fact you haven't bought anything! Well, unless you paid someone to write your articles for you, but that's not what the search engines mean by "buying links". This makes article marketing a great way to build your SEO presence quickly and affordably.
