How Install Windows Driver – Correct Order
Most if not all computer hardware manufacturer these days release their products with Device Drivers
. Another good thing is these drivers comes in package that all shortcuts of drivers are laid in an orderly pattern. Good thing about it is that user will not mistakenly run driver installation in a wrong order. Do you know that there is a correct order of device driver installation? Read on.
For Intel, here is Installation & Configuration Order
Fresh Operating System Installation
Latest Service Pack or Patches
Intel Chipset software Installation Utility (INF Utility, I consider this as the base driver. Chipsets are has direct control to its peripherals)
All other device drivers (Video adapter, Network Interface Card, Audio, Modem, others.)
Intel Application Accelerator if needed (not needed most of the time, I consider it bloat ware.)
Microsoft DirectX (installed by Windows automatically or updated through the Service Pack or Patches)
For Dell, here is Driver Install Order for Desktops and Laptops
Desktop System Software (DSS) or Notebook System Software (NSS)
Chipset (other devices may be recognized if this installation)
Video Adapter
Network Interface Card (NIC)
For laptop only: Dell Quickset or Dell control Point Manager (DCP)
Audio Adapter
Modem
Wireless Network Card
Others (Touch pad, Card Reader, and other applications)
Windows Service Pack or Patches (this should come after Operating System's installation if available on CD, DVD or other media otherwise this may be the last important patch to install before using your computer.)
For Asus computers, here is the order
Chipset driver (INF update in case of Intel chipset)
ATKACPI
Video adapter
UAA
Audio
Modem
Network Interface Card (NIC)
Card Reader
Wireless Console (wireless management console)
Bluetooth driver (this is optional if you don't have BT just skip it)
Wireless Ethernet
Others
Utilities
Microsoft Updates (if this is available in CD or DVD this should be installed after Operating System's installation otherwise this may be the last important patch to install before using your computer.)
Thanks for the installation menu provided by hardware manufacturers, installation order is not much of the problem now. But if your driver comes in different packages then this order is a good reference.
Windows Device Driver is the best way to install and check drivers. "The Device manager lists all the hardware devices installed on your computer. Use the Device Manger to change the properties of any device"
There are different ways of opening Device Manager.
Start menu >> Control Panel >> Performance and Maintenance >> System >> Hardware tab >> Device Manger
Right click My Computer >> Properties >> Hardware tab >> Device Manager
Start >> Run >> type-in devmgmt.msc then hit enter.
I like using option 3. Once you're in the Device Manager's window then here is what you can do:
Install driver
Uninstall driver
Scan for hardware changes
Check the properties of the device
