How Is A Soy Candle Made?
The common ingredients for making soy candles include soy wax
, wax dye, fragrance oil and cotton candlewicks (HTP-105). However, when considering your other candle making materials, you need to decide on how many votive candles to make. A soy candle votive would consume two ounces of soy wax; about a pound of pure soy wax can make 8 votive candles. Natural soy wax can be bought in flake or block form. Beginners usually prefer the wax flakes, as they are easier to manage.
A nice mix of scents makes a great candle. You may decide on different scent combinations, but just make sure that the scented oils and materials you use are compatible with soy wax. The standing ratio for scents and soy wax is one fluid ounce to 16 ounces of wax. Since soy wax holds scents better than paraffin, you may use 1.5 ounces of scent oils in a pound of soya oil to make stronger scent candles. If you want to add color to your candles, dyes are available in block, chip and liquid forms. Just make sure that your dyes agree with soy wax. Also, use a reliable weighing or digital scale in measuring your ingredients.
Prepare a container to melt your soy wax in. If a wax melter is not available or too expensive for you, a traditional kitchen kettle can do nicely as an alternative. You may also use a double boiler in melting your wax. The key is never melting your soy wax in containers that do not have temperature control. Make sure that the container can accommodate a numerical temperature gauge.
It is time to melt your soy wax. Clip a thermometer in your melting container to accurately monitor wax temperature. In general, soy wax melts between 120 to 180 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the temperature reaches 180 degrees, it is time to add in your dyes. Keep stirring until you achieve the color that you wanted. Continued stirring also allows the dye to bind evenly with the soy wax. A flat-bottomed wire whisk works nicely as a stirrer.
When you are done with your wax color, it is time to add your choice of scents or fragrance oil. Still, it is important to regulate the melted wax temperature to around 175 degrees. At this point, you must be cautious not allowing the mixture to exceed 185 degrees. Just remember that adding your fragrance on too cool wax will prevent it from binding with the soya wax. Inversely, adding your fragrances on too hot mixtures will cause the scents to burn off. Stir the oils in the melted wax for about two minutes.
Wait until the wax mixture cools down to 150 or 155 degrees. Then, pour the mixture over your votive candle set-up. Using your warm mold, pour in the hot wax mixture and fill each votive all the way to the top. Once the wax begins to cool down or when a thin skin starts to form on top of your votives, put your wicks into the candle. Insert the wick past the soft skin of cooling wax and keep them centered in the mold. Leave your candles to cool for about four to five hours. Then, lift your candles from the mold. Store them and keep them ready for use.
Making a your own set of soy candles is simple and easy. So go on and start making your own set of soy candles.
