How Is Social Media Helping In Your Career?
Facebook is one of the social networking sites that could affect your career
. And some people dont even know how to use it responsibly that they could end up being busted from their jobs!
Nowadays, we find this simple joy of updating our social media accounts. Having the access to these social sites is not really a main issue in our recent times as we can certainly document each passing moment we have in our life. We always love to share things that we think is of much importance for us. We can simply refer our friends to check on our timeline if they want to know our history. The photos we posted, the status we made could serve as an archive on whats happening to us in the past. But one thing we should need to consider is the responsibility we should hold every time we have some information that we post to these social sites.
Well, time to flip the other side of the coin and see how other people misused Facebook and other social networking sites for their benefit. Some are using it to attack a person, backbiting them, or simply ranting on things that they dont like or are against them. Its a definitely a cruel world.
Would you believe that reality is happening now. We usually see people ranting on their career problems, on how they hate their partners in love, and how they dont like their food they ate at lunch.
Upon my research, there are 15 million users of Facebook and those with age around 18 to 54 that composed 80% of the registered users are actively logged in the last few hours. Now, if you are one of them, you know what I am talking about.
Lets talk some out of the way, how does this benefit those jobseekers right now?
The beauty with these social networks is that you can always UNDO, DELETE or EDIT what youve posted. So if at some point, you realized that what youve done with your status postings could be damaging to your self, you can certainly correct it. But think that there could be friends who might have already seen your postings and might be too late already.
Employers and recruiters will search you in Google, its highly likely they will come across your Facebook page and they will almost certainly take a peek. A first impression will be formed and after a little old Facebook stalking, your fate with that company will be formed. According to facecrooks.com, a survey found that 25% of employers check social networking sites before choosing whom to hire. Half of these employers have chosen to forego candidates due to details found in social media.
So before committing career suicide, here are a few tips to consider:
Adjust your privacy settings to remove your profile from public view
Think Think Think and then Think again before you post anything
Dont overdo the status updates, besides boring your friends, you will give employers the wrong impression about your productivity
Dont overuse the acronyms, especially my all time least favourite FML (I had to Google it the first time I saw it to learn what it meant)
Dont use profile pictures that show you half-dressed with a beer in hand at a music festival this wont impress your potential employers
Resist the urge to share compromising photos no need to explain this one further
Since things have been presented to you, it is good you behave online according to what youve learned above. Just make sure you have to really double check your post and status as not to regret it in the future. Always remember that in any time, your friends will be able to see whatever status you make.
