How Jeans Can Protect You from Snakes

A bizarre new discovery by scientists at a California university has got fashion

designers all over the world paying attention: apparently denim can protect humans from snake venom.

The revelation was had by professionals at Loma Linda University, California, when they had a group of 17 Southern Pacific rattlesnakes of varying sizes bite test objects that were wrapped in denim. Their findings revealed that thanks to the thick, tough properties of denim, the amount of contact that the snakes' fangs had with the concealed object was significantly reduced - by as much as 66%, in fact.

While the reason behind the scientists conducting these tests in the first place isn't exactly certain, the results are certainly interesting, particularly to those who harbour a fear of snakes but live in areas where rattlesnakes are common. It's reassuring to know that something as commonly worn as denim can protect the wearer enough to vastly reduce the amount of poison entering their body, thus giving them far more time to seek medical help should a bite ever occur. The only thing that could be better is if a nineties fashion comeback occurred and everybody start sporting denim jackets once again.

Of course, the best way to deal with a rattlesnake is to avoid it entirely, whether you're wearing denim jeans or not. The venom delivered by rattlers is deadly and can result in loss of life or the loss of a limb should it not be treated quickly enough. However, it's not as simple to avoid these creatures because they are often concealed in long grass or behind rocks. In fact, if you're going to be entering an area known for its rattlesnake population, it's a good idea to stay in the car and avoid walking at all. That also means it's a good idea to ensure you have enough petrol in the vehicle to keep you going and only stop at gas stations and in populated areas to ensure that no nasty surprises occur.

Still, it's good to know that something as fashionably normal as your favourite blue jeans can go a little way to preserving your life should you become the unfortunate victim of a rattlesnake. Just remember, however, that they're not full armour and if a bite does occur, seek immediate medical help and hope that your beloved jeans save the day - and are loose enough to deal with the swelling!
