Do you realize that your everyday, ordinary life can be an incredibly transcendent experience?
That to be human is to be divine?
That there is a magnificence to our essential being that lights up our physical existence in the manner symbolized by how Jesus' body lit up in his transfiguration on the mountain?
So much of so-called spirituality seems to be about escaping our physical existence. But authentic spirituality doesn't escape our bodily existence. Itglories in it.
If you are following me in the Little Prince's story with your own copy of the book (which is the way to get the most benefit out of these daily blogs), we are in chapter 3. The airman is slowly discovering that the Little Prince is from another planet.
The Little Prince, who symbolizes our essential being,is from the heavensin contrast to the mundane person we imagine ourselves to be as a result of being constricted early in life by the demands of family and society, symbolized by the boa constrictor.
The Little Prince's descent from the sky is a picture of how, in our essence, we come out of the heart of the universe, birthed from the divine consciousness that's the source of all that is.
As the 13th century Sufi poet Rumi put it:
We come spinning out of nothingness, scattering stars like dust.
To be spiritual isn't to be "heavenly minded," in the way so many think of spirituality as somehow contrasting with our physical existence. To be spiritual is to ground divine consciousness in everyday reality.
The word spirit just means consciousness. To be spiritual isn't about an other-worldly experience but involves bringing divine consciousness to bear on everything we do in our ordinary life.
Spirituality isn't about escaping this life or somehow transcending it. Rather it's aboutincarnation, whereby the divine consciousness becomes fleshed out in our everyday bodily experience.
When we are fully immersed in our everyday life, completely present, bringing consciousness into everything we do, life itself becomes a transcendent experience, so that we have no need to try to transcend our earthly existence.
As I show in my book
Your Forgotten Self, Jesus epitomizes what it is to be divinely conscious and to ground this fully in a physical experience. He demonstrates for us what it is to be the divine become flesh and blood.
As Deepak Chopra said on Larry King Live as part of a panel that was discussing English Cambridge University scientist Stephen Hawking's new bookThe Grand Design, it isn't that God created the universe as if it were an object, but that Godbecame the universe.
The nothingness (no-thingness) of divine consciousness self-manifested as the created order.
The divine source always remains an impenetrable mystery. Yet this mystery is as it were painted on the vast canvas of the universe, then experienced personally in our individual enjoyment of divine consciousness.
Right there we have what the trinity really means: the source, the expression of the source in the creation, and our divinely conscious experience of the wholeour personal enjoyment of Presence.
When we realize not just as a mental concept, but at a heart level, that we are the self-manifestation of God, the whole of life becomes a thrilling, transcendent experience.
