Should I Take Beekeeping Lessons?

Beekeeping is something that can only be learned over time

, but we all have to start somewhere and beekeeping lessons are the best way to kick off what will be a pattern of learning, understanding and executing.

The most cost effective beginner lessons are available online, as with anything some lessons are better than others and some formats will suit one individual better than another, so it pays to do some research before you jump in.

There are practical lessons available off line too but these are several times and possibly even many times the price of the online lessons. So I would recommend starting out online. Then you will find out exactly what equipment is needed at the beginning, and understand what is required from the beekeeper to successfully manage bees.

You'll be able to decide if you only have the time and space to manage hobby level beekeeping or whether you can commit to a small business in beekeeping. Once you know what is required and what level of commitment you can manage, you'll know how many hives you want and be ready to do a practical hands on class if you choose.

There is no substitute for a hands on experience, but having learned the proper bee jargon and gained a start on leaning to manage the bees you will really be able to get the most out of the more expensive practical classes.

You will know what you're looking for when trying to spot the queen bee. You will know the theory of how to approach the hive and work with the bees. Practical classes will reinforce what you have learned and build on the established foundation.

Practical classes are by no means compulsory, some people will find that they are able get started without them. It all depends on you, and you how confident you feel.

Keeping bees is definitely based on science but it's also an art. Only experience will tell you that the bees are making a different sound today. Only careful observation and sharing your beekeeping experiences with other beekeepers will teach you what this means. Successful beekeepers need to use all their senses, learn as much as they can from any source they find and keep an open mind.

Even though people have been keeping bees for thousands of years we still don't know all there to know about these fascinating creatures. Today's environment is constantly presenting new challenges to the bees and the modern beekeeper, so there is still a lot to learn.

Start out with a good beginning, some basic beekeeping lessons. Learn what you need to know, to get started and take it from there learning as you go and sharing your experiences with other beekeepers.
