How Many Laser Eye Surgeries Do You Know?
For many myopia or hyperopia patients who want to correct their vision but do not
want to wear eyeglasses, laser eye surgeries should be their best choices. In laser eye surgeries, a special laser is applied to reshape the cornea as a result of which proper focusing abilities can be restored. Up to now, those who have undergone laser eye surgeries mostly report that they are able to see clearly without the assistance of eyewears. There are various kinds of laser eye surgeries. How many types of them do you know? And which one is right for you? Check each type below.
The latest and most popular type of laser eye surgery is LASIK. One reason contributing to its popularity lies in the fact that no heat would be generated during the process of the procedure, which means that less harm would be done to the eyes. During the procedure, the surgeon would use an excimer laser to reshape the cornea by firstly making a small incision and producing a flap on the outer layer of the cornea. After the flap is created, the surgeon will make certain corrections to underlay portion of the cornea. At the end of the procedure, the flap will be repositioned. As the incision is rather tiny, there will be no scar left.
Unlike Lasik, PRK is done on the outside layer of the cornea. That is to say, no cutting of the cornea will be produced. Therefore, PRK eye surgery sounds more acceptable for many patients. During the procedure, a small amount of the outer layer of the corneal flap will be removed and then the laser will reshape the cornea to achieve vision correction. One defect of PRK is that more time will be taken for the patients to recover from the surgery.
LASEK is an updated version of the former procedure, PRK. 20% alcohol solution will be used to soften the outside layer of the cornea so that it can be more easily to be removed. As an updated version of PRK eye surgery procedure, LASEK shortens the healing time compared with that of the PRK.
The last type of laser eye surgery talked in this article is CUSTOM VUE LASIK. It can be considered as the same with LASIK, but it is more advanced because it is controlled by computers. Then the surgery will be more precisely performed. It is reported that CUSTOM VUE LASIK is 25% more accurate than LASIK system.
