How Much Will Remodeling the Kitchen Cost?
You have dreamed of a new kitchen with room to entertain and prepare gourmet meals but how much will a major remodeling job set you back
. Overhauling the kitchen is one of the most expensive home improvement projects that can be undertaken but whatever you spend, you will make back when you go to sell the home. A kitchen remodel will increase the value of your property.
To estimate the costs of remodeling your kitchen begin with the cabinetry. New cabinets can be very expensive and you need to figure on spending at least $5,000. $5,000 will get you stock cabinets from home improvement stores which are sold in standard styles and sizes. If you want custom cabinetry then you have to plan on spending twice as much plus the cost of installation. You can save some money if your current cabinets are structurally sound and you just want to given them a fresh look. Cabinet resurfacing will cost about $3,000; the disadvantage is you are not adding any extra cabinet space and they must remain in the current configuration.
The next big expense is going to be purchasing new appliances figure on spending at least $2,000 or more if you are interested in the latest features and styles. You could be able to save some money if you purchase Energy Star appliances which qualify for federal tax credits because they conserve on the use of electric. Stainless Steel models are the most popular right now but they are also the most expensive since they are in demand. There are size and space limitations that could affect your decision on new appliances plus you will have to make sure that the kitchen is properly wired to handle your new appliances. Running new electric lines will drive up the cost of the renovation.
After the cabinets and appliances, the countertop and flooring are going to be your biggest expenses. When calculating the cost of the new counters, figure at least $50 per square foot and that is if you use standard laminate material. If you want a solid composite surface like Corian or Durate expect to pay more and if you want to go high end with granite or marble, the cost shoots up to over $100 per square foot.
Your flooring options include ceramic tile, linoleum, wood and indoor/outdoor carpeting.
The cost of ceramic tile can be expensive because it is the most difficult to install but it will also hold up incredibly well with a minimum amount of maintenance. Depending on the type of tile that you choose, expect to pay between $10 and $20 a square foot. Linoleum is much cheaper at $5 a square foot but it will not last as long. Wood flooring and laminated material that looks like wood is becoming more popular in kitchens. The laminate will be cheaper than real wood and will hold up better in the kitchen because it is water resistant. If you decide to go with carpeting in the kitchen, rubber backed indoor/outdoor carpet sells for about $1 a square foot.
