How Plastic Surgeons Can Help Their Young Patients
Contrary to what some people may believe, there are a number of children who go through cosmetic surgery procedures every year
. This can be for a number of reasons. For instance, some are born with extremely noticeable deformities on their faces. Then, there are those who may sustain injuries due to sports injuries or bad car accidents. Whatever the case may be, children make up a good number of cosmetic surgery patients. With that being said, this can present an extra challenge to a plastic surgeon. Children may be extremely fearful of having a procedure done, or especially in the case of very young patients, apprehensive of even sitting through an examination. However, there are several ways to help reduce these children's fears.
One of the things plastic surgeons can do is create a kid-friendly area in their office. Now, if the professional only deals with children, this will make their task much easier. Instead of sectioning off a portion of the building, they can allow the entire space to be filled with toys, paintings, or other kid-friendly materials. By having things that cater to children this will make the kids feel more welcomed and comfortable when they come in for a consultation or visit.
Another thing they can do is schedule a meeting with the children and their families prior to their surgery. Of course, each patient already goes through a pre-surgical consultation, but this particular meeting would be a little different. Instead of having the average consultation, the child would also have the opportunity to have a walk-through of the place where the procedure will actually take place. Plastic surgeons can explain some of the tools that they will use, as well as some of the things that they will be doing during the procedure. This will allow the children to feel somewhat more comfortable, because they will have more knowledge of exactly what will be taking place.
Lastly, plastic surgeons can also make sure they are as friendly as possible throughout the entire process. Sometimes, medical professionals can be so serious about their work that they unknowingly maintain a stern demeanor. This is okay when they are actually performing a procedure. However, it can be a little intimidating any other time, especially to a child. This isn't to say that all medical specialists have a problem in this area, but a certain number of them do.
Plastic surgeons have an extra set of duties and responsibilities when dealing with children. This can present a challenge for some of them, especially those who are used to working with adults. Thankfully, there are several steps they can take to make the process easier for themselves, as well as their young patients.
