Patients take are around 2-3 days to recuperate after the operation and return home to their normal day-to-day activities. A preoperative phase of the surgery involves undergoing an urethrography to determine the position and extent of the defect. The patient will also not be allowed to ingest anything by mouth 12 hours prior to the surgery. The patients are constantly monitored for the vital signs post surgery until he/she is discharged.
In anastomotic urethroplasty, a silicone catheter is inserted through the penis and threaded into the proximal-urethral end. The dorsal one-third of the urethral anastomosis is begun, completed, and the catheter is retracted slightly and fibrin glue is applied to the suture line to help prevent leakage and fistula formation. The catheter is then withdrawn from the penis and replaced by an appropriately-sized Foley catheter and the incision closed. In buccal mucosal onlay grafting, a graft is positioned to cover the incision done on the outer borders of the defect and then fibrin glue is applied.
