How Teflon Cookware Works

One of the most well-known uses for Teflon coatings is in the cookware industry

. Most people are aware that Teflon has an incredibly non-stick surface, but understanding how that non-stick surface actually sticks to a slippery surface is beyond them. It's not an easy concept to understand if you aren't into science, but when the process is put into layman's terms, anyone can get it.

How Teflon Coatings are Applied

Let's start with the application process for Teflon. There is more than one method used to apply the material, and the method used typically depends on the type of application you are using it for:

1. Sandblasting - Since Teflon itself is a non-stick material, it is, as you can imagine, seemingly impossible to get it to stick to a smooth metal surface. So this method involves sandblasting that smooth metal surface so that it isn't so smooth any longer. Once there are very small scratches in the surface, the Teflon has something that it can grab onto to create a new smooth surface.


2. After sandblasting, then the pot or pan is baked at very high temperatures so that the Teflon will seal and grip tightly to those tiny scratches.

One thing you may recall about pots and pans that are coated with Teflon is the fact that they can be easily scratched. All it takes is one use of a metal utensil inside the pot or pan and you have the potential for scratches. This is because sandblasting does create quite a thin layer of Teflon on top of the surface of the cookware.

On the other hand, some applications require the use of a bonding agent in order to get the Teflon to stick to the surface it is being applied to. This method is sometimes used on cookware and in other applications as well. It basically involves using a resin to make the Teflon stick to the metal.


Whichever method is used, you get the same result: a pot or pan that is coated with non-stick material and is perfect for cooing with. Of course through the years there have been many tests conducted on Teflon cookware, and today there are a lot of concerns about the Teflon coating flaking off and getting into food.

However, DuPont stands by its product and says that tests show Teflon is safe for cooking and commercial use as long as normal cooking temperatures are used. After all, in addition to being non-stick, Teflon is also designed to be resistant to flaking, chipping, peeling, or other types of abrasions that could cause people to be concerned. The manufacturer also has taken strides to make sure that the materials used are non-toxic so that if a small flake were accidentally ingested, no harm would occur.

So Teflon and other DuPont products definitely have their place, both in the home and in industrial settings. Understanding how these materials work is the first step in determining if they are the right choice for your product. After all, there are numerous uses this seemingly magical project can be used for. It takes an expert's knowledge to know when you will be able to use it.
