How To Assemble A Kaleidoscope Quilt Block
How to Assemble the 3-Color Quilt Block:
1. Choose the quilt block size, i.e. 6", 8", 10", 12" etc. Small projects, such as a handbag, would look nicer with a smaller kaleidoscope.
2. Make or buy the large triangle template. The correct size is one that will have two triangles, placed point-to-point, reaching to the outside edges of the block.
3. Make or buy the small triangle template for the corners of the block.
4. Choose one light and one dark color for the large triangles. Patterned fabric increases the kaleidoscope effect.
5. Cut 8 large triangles (4 light and 4 dark) for each quilt block.
6. Select a medium-tone color for the small corner triangles.
7. Cut 4 corner triangles for each quilt block.
8. Take two light and two dark large triangles and lay them in a half-circle, alternating the colors. (You should have light-dark-light-dark and only 4 triangles.)
9. Sew these four triangles together and press the seams flat. This is the top half of the circle. Set it aside while you assemble the lower half of the circle.
10. Assemble the lower half-circle being careful that you continue with the same alternating sequence around the circle. Sew these triangles together and press the seams flat.
11. Pin the two half-circles together and sew them.
12. Sew the corner triangles to the quilt block. Press all seams flat

How To Assemble the 6-Color Quilt Block:
Steps 1, 2 and 3 are the same.
4. Select four colors for the large triangles: 1 light pattern, 1 light solid, 1 dark pattern, 1 dark solid)
5. Cut 2 large triangles from each fabric, for a total of 8 triangles.
6. Select two medium colors (either pattern or solid) for the small triangles.
7. Cut two small corner triangles from each fabric.
8. Assemble the top half of the circle using one triangle from each fabric. Sew these triangles together and press the seams flat.
9. Assemble the lower half of the circle being careful to follow the same alternating sequence around the circle. Sew the triangles and press the seams.
10. Sew the two half-circles together.
11. This is where it gets a little tricky. When choosing which small triangle to place in each corner, you need to think of the adjoining quilt blocks. When 4 quilt blocks are assembled together, the small triangles will form a circle and they must also alternate in fabric. The easiest way to do this is to sew the large circles of four quilt blocks and then place the small triangles to create a small circle of alternating fabrics.
