How To Avoid Root Canals

Keeping your teeth healthy is a very important part of your overall health

. If your teeth are healthy, you can prevent a number of other health problems that can develop over time. Periodontal disease is caused by bacteria that have accumulated from poor oral hygiene. It is a more severe form of gum disease and it can impact your general health if left untreated. It can lead to tooth decay, tooth loss, and gum erosion. The bacteria can infect the tooth and cause you to need a root canal, extraction, or dentures. If you want to prevent the need for oral surgery and keep yourself healthy, you should make it a priority to take good care of your teeth and to visit your dentist regularly.

Make Brushing and Flossing a Habit

It is important that you make brushing and flossing twice a day a part of your daily regimen. When you eat or drink, your teeth become covered with the sugars, acids, and germs from the things you ingest. Brushing your teeth in the morning removes those deposits that accumulate overnight while you sleep. An evening brushing removes the deposits that accumulate during the day. You should floss between all of your teeth every time you brush them to remove the debris that gets lodged between your teeth. Be sure you brush not only between your incisors, but also between the bicuspids, cuspids, molars, and wisdom teeth.

Regularly Visit Your Dentist

Most dentist offices employ a dental hygienist. The dental hygienist is the person who will give your teeth a professional cleaning. They can instruct you in brushing and flossing properly, give you fluoride treatments, and give you tips on what foods you should avoid and what foods you should eat to help reduce your chance of getting periodontal disease. You should make it a habit to visit your dental hygienist twice a year for a proper, professional cleaning to keep your teeth healthy. They are there to answer all your questions about oral care and the effects poor hygiene can have on your teeth and general health.

If You Need Dental Work, Don't Panic

If you find that you need dental work, you should not panic. Dental work does not have to be a stress-inducing situation. Your dentist has procedures that will help to alleviate the pain from dental work and techniques to help you relax before and during the procedure. Make sure that the dentist who will be performing the procedure is a Doctor of Dental Surgery. He or she will have the letters D.D.S. after their name if they hold this particular degree. The D.D.S. title will let you know that they have received the proper training and experience to be able to provide you with proper oral care. They will have the knowledge and expertise to perform periodontal therapy, root canals, extractions, veneers, crowns, and dentures. They will be able to treat you if you have periodontal disease, or perform fillings and put in crowns if you have cavities. If you need to have an extraction, the dentist will be able to perform the dental extractions safely and with a minimal amount of pain.
