How To Bath Cat | Bathing, Skin Care Tips For Feline Cats

It is common knowledge that most cats hate getting wet

, which is probably the reason that just the thought of bathing a cat can make even the most experienced pet owners wince. Cats spend a lot of time grooming themselves, using their tongues and their teeth, however they can get dirty occasionally, which definitely calls for a bath. The following tips may be useful, while bathing a cat:

Plan the cat's bath when she is as calm and mellow as she can get. Alternately, you could ensure that she get plenty of exercise before the bath, which will probably tire her out. Set the bath supplies out ahead of time, which includes a good shampoo for cats, a soft and fluffy towel, a comb, a brush, a large tub filled with lukewarm water and a handheld shower hose or a plastic tumbler to wet and rinse the cat with.

Comb the cat's hair, especially if the cat has long hair before you begin bathing her. Before bathing a cat, it is also strongly recommended that you trim the nails, to avoid getting scratched. Be prepared to get wet, jumped on and splattered with soap suds. So make sure that you dress accordingly.

If you are using a spray hose, wet the cat thoroughly, without pouring any water on her eyes, nose, and ears. You could even do the same thing with a plastic pitcher or tumbler.

Mix one part of the cat shampoo with five parts of water and massage the cat with the solution, to work up some lather. Start from the head and lather your way to the tail, in the direction of the hair growth, avoiding the face, eyes, and ears. After a few minutes, rinse the shampoo off thoroughly, using either a spray or a pitcher. Make sure that all the traces of shampoo have been removed, or it could irritate the cat's skin and act like a dirt magnet.

Using a damp washcloth, wipe the cat's face thoroughly. On most occasions you can use plain lukewarm water to wet the washcloth. However, if the cat's face is dirty and requires more than water, use an extra-diluted shampoo solution, making sure you don't get any of it into the eyes or ears.

Drying the cat is as important as bathing her. Wrap the cat in a large, but soft and fluffy towel and keep her in a warm place till she is completely dry. If your cat cooperates, you can use a blow-dryer on the lowest setting to help her dry faster. To avoid tangles in her fur, make sure that you use a wide-toothed comb. To make the cat look forward to her next bath, praise her and reward her with a kitty-treat.

If planned and executed correctly, by following the above steps, bathing a cat need not be a difficult or unpleasant task for the pet owner as well as the cat.
