Giving your dog a bath plays an important role in caring for your pet's health

. It helps to keep the coat and skin clean and free from parasites. If you own a short-haired dog, then he will be quite easy to bathe. Small dogs can be given a bath even in a sink or bathtub. If you are using a tub, using a hose attachment makes the process very easy. Larger dogs or those with longer hair may in some cases require a couple of people to accomplish the task. Large dogs should be bathed in a bathtub or outdoors in the yard.

If your dog does not have any skin problems or fleas, you can use any type of mild tearless shampoo. However, for dogs those suffer from skin conditions or parasite problems; use only the shampoo that your veterinarian recommends or one that is specially designed to tackle the problem. Regular shampoos may be diluted and then used since most dog shampoos are quite thick and difficult to work into lather. The best way to do this is to add some dog shampoo into an empty bottle and then keep adding small quantities of water till the right consistency is obtained. Do not use human shampoos or washing liquids as they can be too harsh for a dog. Before you begin to bathe him, brush your dog well so that dead skin and loose fur is removed. Knots and tangles must also be removed. If you don't do this, the dirt and suds can remain in the knots and contribute to skin problems.

Begin by wetting the dog's body, except for the head. Start shampooing the hind legs and then the tail and rear. Then shampoo the rest of the body, including the chest and front legs. After this, gently wet the head and lather the area carefully. Once this is done begin rinsing thoroughly, beginning with the head and ears, and then the body and legs. Remember to also rinse the underside by having the dog stand on his hind legs. Once the shampoo residue is removed, wrap the dog in a clean towel so that the water is absorbed. This also prevents the dog from shaking the water off his body and onto your furniture. After this, carefully pat him dry and dry his coat with a hair dryer. Use it at a low setting and hold it at a safe distance from the dog's skin. Make sure that you talk to him in a lilting voice throughout so as to ease his discomfort.
