How To Be A Successful Commercial Interior Designer

When designing small spaces such as bed and living rooms

, sometimes it is acceptable for someone with basic knowledge of interior design or licensed residential designers to do the job. But for larger spaces or commercial projects like an office building, supermarkets or medical and dental clinics, it is highly likely that one would rely on schooled professionals with a fully developed skill set. Proficiency in space planning, presentation drawings and problem-solving are just some of the abilities expected. If you are looking at a serious career in commercial interior design, you will need to be adept in two specific components that are required to be able to properly practice your chosen profession.

With the dawn of the computer age, large drafting tables have now been replaced by CAD workstations. CAD, or Computer Aided Design, is a symbol based and visual communication method utilizing computer technology to design and draft a part, product or even entire buildings. As ideas are created and translated into a specific format, the program produces blueprints and design drawings that are required and used as references by general contractors. Now considered an integral tool, it makes it possible for designers to layout and improve their work as well as save it as a file for future revisions. It has allowed firms to cut down design cycles and lower operating costs. Application and knowledge of CAD is definitely a must. It will be easier to deal with clients as well as contractors and will give them a sense of comfort knowing that they are dealing with someone who is up to date with advancements in his field.

Dealing with commercial interior is not limited to drawing and layouts. These days it is an advantage to be able to creatively apply scientific principles to design structures. To be able to employ technical theories will require studies in the discipline of engineering. The ability to move, maximize and even create spaces from virtually non existent areas can be made easy by having a background in engineering.

As interior design specialty areas constantly grow and change, those who wish to pursue this as a career choice must be able to meet extensive requirements and present competencies that traverse other areas of specialization. In some regions, this profession is even regulated by the government and designers are obliged to acquire special certifications before they are granted permission to practice there.

It may seem like a whole lot to take in, but if you are determined to succeed in this line of work, or in any field for that matter, it will entail years of study and sacrifice to eventually reap the rewards and gain the respect and be regarded as a true professional.
