How To Be Courageous To Get What You Want
How To Be Courageous To Get What You Want
I saw a poster the other day. The poster said, "Superman." There was a picture of Christopher Reeve. People might remember him for his everlasting expos of Superman. That's how most people remember him. But do many know of and remember the pain he went through, being paralysed from his neck down?
The pain he endured will never be forgotten, by many, me included.
He became paralysed from a tragic accident from falling off a horse he was riding. This accident led him to be able to soar above, with wings flapping above his physical boundaries. It doesn't mean that things weren't hard for him, for, at one point, he actually contemplated committing suicide. Yet, he didn't. He went beyond that and more. So this got me thinking, what gave him the characteristics, the drive, that made him so invincible?
It comes down to three words: Courage, Optimism and Determination.
Courage. Most of us withdraw, shy away and even run from any challenges that come our way. Maybe we don't like conflict, maybe we feel weak to face challenges, especially the big ones that often come our way. Truth is, there will come a time when we must face our deepest fears at some time in our lives. There may be no escaping.
It could be a job that you accepted where you will need to relocate to the other side of the planet. Or it could be making that decision to end a particular relationship. For you to make any progress in your life, you will need to take action to execute all the changes that need to be done. Progression is key to life. And the thing to realise here is that it is you, and no one else, who must take action to make those changes. In some situations there will not be anyone to do it for you. You will need to be brave and strong.
Optimism. Ever heard the analogy of the half full and half empty glass? Well, it's true. There is a 50/50 chance of being positive and optimistic or being negative. Which side are you on most of the time? Negative thinking can be a hard habit to break, yet it can be reduced or even eliminated with a bit of focus. How? Speak positively and optimistically. Act and behave positively and optimistically. Replace your negative thinking and self-talk with positive, optimistic and uplifting messages. And before you know it, you will think, act and behave positively and optimistically. To help you with this, make it a point to surround yourself with the most upbeat and positive people that you can get close to.
Self-determination. Where do you see yourself in 1 year, 2 years, 5 years? Even in 10 years or 20 years? What is it that you want to achieve and accomplish in those times? You must have aspirations, goals. A person without a goal is like a bus without a driver. Set your goals, write them down and be determined to achieve them no matter what. Don't allow limits, either real or perceived, to keep you from the objective that you want to achieve.
There is always a bit of superhero inside each and every one of us. Some people don't know it. It takes an unexpected event to be able to discover that hero that's inside of us. You are a Superman in your own right!
