How To Be Healthy - Why You Should Control Weight

If you are overweight you have very likely experienced some of the disadvantages that go with it

. You may suffer discomfort just doing the everyday things - sitting in a train, bus, plane or cinema seat. It may be you already have difficulty doing the simple things like walking to the shops or climbing stairs. While these things are annoying and frustrating, the greatest problem is the risk to your health. If you are in the 45 to 64 age group and overweight, you are in a high-risk group. This age group has the highest amount of obesity, which means it has the greatest risk of suffering some of the modern lifestyle diseases.

If you do not control your weight you put yourself at risk of developing one or more of a number of illnesses. Here are just some of the health problems you could face:

* Heart disease

* High blood pressure (hypertension)


* Stroke * Atherosclerosis - blocked arteries caused by high cholesterol

* Diabetes

* Gall bladder disease

* Sleep apnoea

* Osteoarthritis

* Daytime sleepiness and fatigue

* Social isolation and depression

The list is much longer than this. It goes on to include certain cancers, back problems, hernia, varicose veins and breathlessness. In other words, an obese person is in generally poor health, which will only get worse. While not every overweight or obese person will suffer all of these conditions, they will suffer some of them. At one end of the scale is the danger of early death because heart disease is the biggest killer in the Western world. At the other end is having to live with one or more chronic illnesses that cause discomfort and loss of quality of life.

But it does not have to be like that. You can fix it. You can control your weight and get it down to a manageable level. I am not talking about trying to match the weight of skinny models or people with perfect bodies. I am talking about working on your weight to lower the risk of these diseases and to increase you enjoyment of life by being able to move around more freely and with greater ease. If you can get your weight down by even 5-10 percent you will notice a difference in your health and in the way you feel about yourself.

Most of us know a number of people who have suffered or died from a heart attack. The most common cause of heart disease is an unhealthy diet, which results in an accumulation of fat in the body and a build up of plaque in the arteries usually caused by high cholesterol.

If you take action now to control your weight you will protect your health and live longer. There is no reason why you will not be healthy for life. You will be able to continue doing the things you like to do without being held back because you are overweight and suffering from some disability that could have been prevented.
