How To Be Patient: Ways To Increase Your Patience Levels
How To Be Patient: Ways To Increase Your Patience Levels
Our hectic modern way of life doesn't exactly lend itself to being patient. So the question of how to be patient doesn't always arise, even though it probably should. Doubly so if you're male like me - we tend to be less patient generally and start growling and muttering under our breath if we're kept waiting for too long.
So is it possible to be more patient without turning into a wimp?
In short, yes.
Here are some simple ideas for how to be patient:
Count to ten
I know. Cliche alert.
But it works.
The time it takes to count to ten - even rapidly as though you were in some comedy show - gives your brain a little bit of time to think before you blurt out the first annoyance that comes to mind and then spend the next hour regretting your outburst.
Take a deep breath
Cliche number two.
But again it works.
The (quite literally) breathing space you get from taking a deep breath or two is again a way to let your rational mind scramble its way to the front and push your impulsive mind back a bit.
Get angry - but only with yourself
Not as easy to do but still remarkably effective.
Maybe you did kick off and be less patient than you're aiming to be.
Take a little bit of time to tell yourself off. Don't spend days or weeks beating yourself up. Just a big enough ticking off that you'll think twice next time.
Don't worry that you're not perfect
No-one is perfect. Especially not those people who tell you that they are.
You'll slip up occasionally but that's all part of being human.
Work on yourself so that you're patient more often.
Maybe take up some form of hobby that helps you to unwind.
Relax more often
Relaxation is something we forget to do as we get older. It's easy to relax when you're young. But when what seems like the pressures of the whole world are bearing down on you, it's a different matter.
You may be thinking that you haven't got the time to relax but there are almost always a few spare minutes in even the most hectic schedule. And if there aren't, diarize them in or swap out something that isn't essential such as watching the television news.
Have a play with these different ideas on how to be patient and see what a positive difference they begin to make in your life.
