How To Become A Career Novelist

There are many ways you can make a living in today's world

. Just look around at all the different jobs that are available. Many people go through four or five different careers in their lives. If you are creative, then there's certainly no shortage of ways you can make a living by expressing your creativity. One of the more popular ways is to become a novelist. Just looking at all the books available on Amazon is testament to this fact. Especially with the current explosion of electronic publishing and an increasing number of books that are available on Kindle. If you'd like to become a career novelist, then you have certainly come to the right place. In this article, you'll learn some basic steps on how to get there.

The first thing you've got to do is to treat it like a business, just like any other. If you were an entrepreneur opening up a pizza place, you certainly wouldn't treat it like a hobby. You wouldn't go in and bake pizzas whenever you felt like it. It would be an all day job. And before you got started, you would have developed a business plan. Just like any other business, if you want to become a career novelist, you've got to have a business plan.

First of all, you've got to figure out how long it's going to take you to write a book. One year is a pretty good time frame if you are just starting out. Give yourself a few months to come up with the basic outline of the story and all the characters. Then give yourself a couple more months to actually write the manuscript. Finally give yourself a couple more months to revise and tighten up your manuscript.

If you're just starting out, then getting an agent, and getting a book deal is going to be difficult. There's just no two ways about it. Unless you are already famous, and have plenty of people waiting to buy your book, it's going to be an uphill battle. Once you finish your first book, you'll have to spend at least thirty minutes to an hour every day looking for an agent.

Of course, as soon as you finish your first book, you should get started on your next book. If you can produce a new book every year, that's a pretty good pace. The second year will be the toughest, because you'll be writing your second book while looking for an agent or a book deal. But once you get that first book out there and on bookshelves, it gets easier.

If you don't like the idea of looking for a publisher, you can go the self publishing route. More and more people are doing this. If you self publish your first couple of books, and do some decent marketing on your own, it will be much easier to get a traditional publisher later on down the line. Just realize you're going to need to spend some time, at least thirty minutes a day, marketing your book. This isn't so bad, as otherwise you'd have to spend that time looking for an agent.

Once you get a good rhythm going, it will get easier and easier. Pretty soon, you'll be getting books published, and getting fat paychecks, every year. Just keep on writing, and never give up.
