How To Become A Farrier
So youre interested in working with horses and that interest has sparked an interest in working as a farrier
. Now you ask yourself just how to become a farrier? Like any profession, becoming a farrier will require some major commitments so before jumping in headfirst, its best to do some thorough research and test the waters first.
Is farriery right for you?
First you have to decide whether farriery is right for you. The job is hard work and you also have to realize that it brings danger since even friendly horses can be spooked. And if youre working underneath it doing some horseshoeing, well you better know what youre doing!
Farriery is a tough physical job, but that doesnt mean its limited to a certain type of person. Though there is a certain amount of fitness required, men and women of all backgrounds become farriers, so as long as youre motivated, work hard and love horses, you can you can too!
Certifications
Find out whether farriers in your area require farrier certification or not. If you do require a certification, youll have to attend a school or apprentice under someone that provides that certification, which will require more some researchvisit our schools listing.
If the area you live in doesnt require any formal certification, its also possible to self-study or informally apprentice with someone. Due to the difficulty of the job, however, its recommended you gain as much experience as possible before you take on a career in farriery. That doesnt necessarily mean youll have to go to a school or take part in a formal apprenticeship, its just that that is usually the case.
Career vs. job
If youre looking for a job rather than a career, thats a different situation that wont require as much long-term foresight. But if youre thinking long-term youll want to think of your longevity. Its a demanding job, so the more skilled you are the easier youll make your life and the more youll appreciate your job.
Start-up costs
There are some start up costs to becoming a farrier, such as school tuition and living expenses and transportation costs while in school. There are also a number of farrier supplies required to work as a farrier, though some schools may let you keep the tools you use while in school.
On your way
Once youve done your research to determine what requirements you have to satisfy to legally work as a farrier in your area and have assessed whether you can fund the start-up costs youre on your way to becoming a farrier. All the best with your journey!
