How To Become An Administrative Medical Assistant - Four Steps to Help You Start a Great Career

Have you always wanted to work at a healthcare facility without facing blood or spending many years on medical training? If your answer was 'yes', then your dream can become true if you decide to become an administrative medical assistant, or, as it is often called, a medical secretary.

As a medical secretary, you will be in charge of all the communication from and to your office. This means that you will handle fax machines, telephones, mail, Internet searches, and e-mail. However, you will be different from a regular secretary because you will have additional skills that are specific to the medical field, such as medical transcription (translating doctors' notes into typed documents), medical billing and coding, and knowledge of laboratory procedures. Plus, you can always move into a managerial role once you master the logistics of the office.

So, if all this sounds great, here are the four steps that can help you become a very successful administrative medical assistant:

Step 1 - Start Your Education

To become a medial secretary, you should complete your high school diploma and then enroll in a diploma or associate's degree in medical administrative assisting. If you are already working elsewhere but want to switch jobs later, you can always enroll in distance learning and receive necessary study material by mail or online. Make sure that you enroll in an institute accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs or by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools.

Step 2 - Gain Experience

Once you're done with your administrative medical assistant training, you need to get some experience. Start by sending your resume to local medical offices while you're still training. This way, you will have sufficient hands-on training as well by the time you complete your training program.

Step 3 - Get Certified

You will have to pass an exam offered by the American Association of Medical Assistants in order to become a Certified Administrative Medical Assistant. Though this may be optional in some states, the certificate will boost your resume and make your potential employers develop interest in your skills.

Step 4 - Work on your Appearance

As a medical secretary, you will reflect your workplace's status and that of your employer. Thus, you should be well groomed at all times. You need to pay special attention to what you wear, your hygiene and grooming. Look professional and avoid showing off too much skin, or else you'll put your job at stake.

With these four steps, you can easily become an administrative medical assistant. Follow each of these to a tee, and your career as a medical secretary will be a major success.
