From flat tires, transmission issues, to poorly working wiper blades, there is no shortage of things that could go wrong. One thing that happens frequently, especially in cold weather climates like Canada, is a car battery dying. However, while a common occurrence, the majority of drivers dont know how to boost a dead battery.

The truth is that every driver needs to know how to boost a dead battery. A dead battery could happen to anyone in any type of car, even if you have a new car. You could have a faulty battery for all you know. This is also way it is a good idea to have jumper cables in your car as part of your emergency kit.

Steps to boost a dead car battery

The good news is that, once you learn how to do boost a dead battery, it is fairly simple and straightforward. All you have to do is follow the step below:

Find a car that will give you a boost: You cannot do it alone, so call a friend or family member that can give you a boost with their vehicle.

Position the car that will give you a boost: Hopefully your vehicle did not die in a confined place that is difficult for other vehicles to reach your car. Position the running car either in front of or beside the vehicle that needs a boost. Just make sure you are close enough to connect the jumper cables.

Attach cables to running vehicle: Start with the running vehicle and attach the cables to its battery. Make sure that you connect the positive clamp (usually red) to the positive post on the battery and the negative clamp (usually black) to the negative post on the battery. Make sure that when connecting the clamps that you do not allow the clamp on the lose end of the cable to touch each other at any time or you will create a series of sparks.

Attach the cables to the dead car: Connect the clamps to the dead battery of the other car. First, make sure that you connect the positive clamp to the positive post on the dead battery. Second, connect the negative clamp to a grounded metal part of the vehicle. Do not connect the negative clamp to the dead battery.

Turn on the vehicles: Turn on the working vehicle first and then turn on the car that had the dead battery. Once the dead vehicle starts up (it may take a few attempts) let it run for a few minutes to recharge the battery.

Remove the cables: Remove the cables from one vehicle at a time. Remove the negative clamp first and positive clamp second. Make sure that they do not touch or you will create sparks. Remove the cables from the other car.

If you are not confident in your ability to boost your car battery, you can always call a tow truck. For a few bucks they will be able to give your battery a boost and get you back on the road.
