How To Brush Dogs Teeth | Cleaning, Care For Canine Teeth

Dental diseases are some of the most common ailments that domesticated canines suffer from

. These dental diseases occur due to a lack of proper dental care. They can be prevented by a few simple measures like feeding your pet a crunchy diet, giving them the appropriate chew treats and toys and most importantly, brushing their teeth everyday. Good dental hygiene should begin as early as possible, to allow you, as well as your dog to get used to it. It is quite natural for pets to put up some resistance towards brushing their teeth, especially if the process is not introduced properly. That is why you should not start directly with a toothbrush; your pet may not allow you to insert a strange looking object into its mouth. In order to introduce the brushing sessions, first gently rub your fingers along his teeth and inside his mouth.

Once your dog gets accustomed to this, wrap a piece of clean gauze around your fingers and dab a bit of canine toothpaste on it. Human toothpaste should never be used, as it is inedible and can make your dog sick. Rub your dog's teeth gently with this for a while. Repeat this a few times, till he gets used to it. Then, you can repeat the same process, using a finger, rubber, pet brush. It is quite similar to gauze, so your pet should not have a problem with it. Finally, when you think your pet is ready, introduce him to a toothbrush. Let him investigate the toothbrush for a few minutes, before you start brushing his teeth.

While brushing, start with the front teeth at the top and then move towards the back ones. Focus more on the outer side of the teeth as brushing the inner sides is not easy. Once you are done with the teeth on top, repeat the same steps for the teeth at the bottom. Initially, these sessions should not last for more than a minute or two. In any case, you should make sure that you stop before he starts fussing. When you start brushing your dog's teeth, for the first few days you can cover only the front few teeth and gradually increase a few more teeth in every session. Tartar and plaque have a higher tendency to develop in the rear teeth. If tartar and plaque are ignored, they could cause the teeth to rot and fall, eventually affecting the dog's eating habits, personality, lifestyle and overall health adversely. Therefore, to avoid that, please ensure that you make brushing sessions fun and praise your dog so that he looks forward to following the proper dental hygiene.
