How To Buy A Coffee Maker

Kathryn Janeway, Captain of Star Trek's Voyager once said "Coffee is the finest organic suspension ever devised

. Unfortunately, the replicator hasn't been invented yet and a coffee maker is still a kitchen necessity.

But of the many choices and options that are out there, what's the best of your coffee drinking style and preferences? Here are some things to consider.

How much coffee do you generally drink at home? Is it a quick cup on the way out the door? Or do you savor several cups over the morning paper or while checking your email.

A standard full-size coffeemaker will brew up to about 12 cups at home. You can look for options that brew one to four cups or you can opt for a single serving machine. Ultimately, selecting the right size of coffee maker for your coffee preferences is going to save you money.

Think about how much space you have available on your kitchen counter for your coffee maker. Space saving models are available that will fit under the counter. Keep in mind that if you want to upgrade to a full-size cappuccino or espresso machine, you'll need to devote a good amount of counter space.

Like most appliances, you can spend as little or as much as you want. Coffee makers range in price from about twenty dollars to well into the hundreds. Simply, the more features you want, the more you're going to have to pay. So, think it through, do you need all of the bells and whistles? Some features make your coffee drinking more enjoyable. Some make coffee brewing more convenient. And some are just cool, but not necessary.

What's that old idiom? "Wake up and smell the coffee?" Programmable coffee makers can allow you to set up your machine the night before and awake to the aroma of freshly brewed coffee. You can set the brewing time so that it brews automatically. But keep in mind that coffee loses freshness when exposed to air, so ground coffee left overnight may lose some of its flavor.

Of course, if the freshness is an issue you can look for a coffee maker that will grind the beans just before brewing.

Most coffee makers will allow you to adjust for the strength of the brew. This feature will adjust the flow of water over the coffee grounds. This is also helpful if you wish to make a smaller amount of coffee.

In a hurry? Single serving coffee makers can be convenient. And in the long run, you save money because you don't brew a full pot and have to pour it out.

A convenient, and almost must have feature is the automatic shutoff. That way if you have to leave the house in a hurry, you won't spend the day worrying about the coffee pot.

In more of a hurry than that and not able or willing to wait for the whole pot to brew? You can find a model that has a pause brew feature. Pause brewing allows you to stop the machine, fill your cup and then allow for the rest of the pot to brew. There are, however, coffee purists who will tell you that ruins the integrity of the coffee since the coffee needs to complete the cycle to have its full flavor.

Most coffee makers have a glass carafe. But other models also come in stainless steel and thermal. A thermal carafe is good for keeping coffee fresh longer. Plus the carafe doesn't have to sit on the burner to keep the coffee warm. Another option is to buy a separate carafe and transfer the coffee to that once brewed. If you don't want to bother with a carafe at all, some brands offer carafe-less machines where the coffee is brewed directly into a thermal insulated container and dispensed directly to your cup. If you do have a model with a carafe, having an extra carafe around is never a bad idea.
