How To Buy An Aquarium

Most people may not know that aquariums are considered to be great stress busters

. The fact is that studies have shown people who have an aquarium installed in their house have lower levels of stress. This is because of the obvious reason that there is something relaxing about watching fish swim and gurgle about. You may have noticed aquariums in the most unlikely places such as the hospital waiting room. This is the reason why they put an aquarium there. So if you are a person who has a high stress job, then you should seriously consider buying an aquarium and installing it in your home.

Buying an aquarium is not a difficult task but there are a few things that need to be kept in mind before doing so. First thing to know is that there are basically 2 different types of fish, salt water and fresh water fish. Therefore there are 2 kinds of aquariums, salt water and fresh water aquariums. Salt water fish, especially the tropical variety, are the most brightly colored of them all. In most cases you cannot put a salt water fish in a fresh water tank and vice versa. Among certain types of fish there are types that cannot get along with other fish. This is why it is important to de research and find out which ones are compatible with each other. Apparently it is not only humans who like to eat fish, but other fishes as well.

All right so now you have done research on fish and want to get stated, so what next? The first things you will need to purchase are tank, light, filtration system, air pump, thermometer, aquarium sand and aquarium salt. In most cases if you are buying an aquarium as a set, all of these will be included in the purchase. You will also need to get a water conditioner that helps neutralize any chemicals found in the water such as chlorine and heavy metals. If you are setting up a salt water aquarium, you will need to get aquarium salt for obvious reasons. Salt will also be required by fresh water fish but in much smaller quantities. For fresh water fish, you should follow instructions as to how much salt to use.

If you live in a cold climate and do not run the house heater often, then you will need to purchase an aquarium heater, especially if they are tropical fishes. When putting aquarium sand you should fill the bottom at approximately one inch high. A 30 percent water change should be done weekly. Any cleaning should only be done with water, no detergents.
