How To Care For An Aging Pet

The difference between your pet aging versus another persons pet is extreme

. Cats, small dogs, medium dogs and large dogs all reach their senior years at different times. Cats usually live the longer than dogs. They often reach sixteen years old. Small dogs are considered senior when they are between nine and twelve years old. Medium sized dogs are senior between the ages of nine and eleven and one half years. Large dogs are the unluckiest because they are considered old between seven and one half to ten and one half years.

Just like us, pets are stricken with various diseases and symptoms of becoming old. As they reach their golden years they are likely to have joint pain, arthritis, cancer, dental problems, heart disease and general muscle pains. If these problems are discovered early enough they can usually be treated. Stay on top of going to the vet as your pet reaches these older years and their quality of life will be much better. Plus, you can keep your buddy around for that much longer!

It is easy to tell when your pet is aging. They will have less energy, no appetite, weight fluctuations, muscle stiffness and joint troubles. Your pet might have to urinate more often and have trouble getting up to walk. If you notice that they are hanging out with you less or are bumping into furniture these are sure signs that your dog or cat is well into their senior years.

Once your pet is seven years old you should take them to the vet once a year. After ten they should have a thorough exam by the vet once every other year. This would likely include geriatric testing, ultrasound, blood testing and EKG. Make sure that you do everything you can at home. Feed your pet high quality commercial dog food, take them out to exercise and love on them as much as you possibly can.

Keeping your pet on a homeopathic routine can help to extend their life, as well. Hydrocotyle asiatica, arthrospira platenis and rosmarinus officinalis are all excellent for their support of both the nervous and immune systems.

Nobody that I know wants to lose their pets early. Just writing this article makes me sad because my Mom's dog is eleven years old. I will miss that girl a lot when she decides to go. Try to take care of them like you would take care of yourself and they will likely stick around a lot longer.
