How To Choose A Kettle

It is estimated that approximately 97% of UK households have kettles (compared with

only say 15% of Chinese households, though this percentage is rapidly rising). In marketing terms the UK is therefore what is known a saturated market all the people who are likely to buy kettles already own one. However, approximately 8 million kettles are sold in the UK annually, which means that in the region of 30% of UK households acquire a new or additional kettle each year. This is partly to replace kettles that have reached the end of their useful lives and partly to take advantage of new features and technology. Because the market for kettles is a dynamic and innovative one it is important that we should know what to look for when the time comes to buy a replacement.

First, should I buy an electric kettle or a stove top one? There are a number of reasons why electric kettles are preferable: they are more energy efficient, they tend to come to the boil more quickly, and they typically have automatic shut-offs and are therefore safer.

Second, do I want a corded or a cordless kettle? Cordless kettles, which rest on a base which supplies power to the kettle and from which they can easily be lifted once they have come to the boil, make it considerably easier to handle the kettle.

Third, how large should my kettle be? Many modern kettles have capacities of between 1.4 and 1.7 litres, though larger and smaller ones can be found. If you have a larger family, need to boil water more frequently, or need to boil larger amounts of water (for instance for cooking) a larger capacity kettle may be desirable. However, if only small amounts of water typically need to be boiled (e.g. for single cups of tea) then a larger kettle, which may require more water simply to cover the element, will tend to consume more energy. And, as kettles are responsible for an estimated 27% of all electricity used in domestic cooking in the UK, this is not a trivial consideration.

Fourth, how powerful should the heating element be? Some modern kettles now have 3 kilowatt elements which enable water to be brought to the boil very quickly. This is particularly relevant where larger amounts of water are being heated.

Fifth, what style should I choose? Clearly, the aesthetics of kettles is a matter of personal judgment. But fortunately our choices in terms of colour, style and materials have expanded dramatically in recent years.
