How To Choose The Best Sail Covers

Boating season brings to many a need for new sail covers

. There are so many different sizes and styles to choose from, and it must be said that you need some information and education on the subject in order to find the best one for your boat. There are all kinds of different sizes, shapes, materials and features that these products have that you need to be aware of, so here are some tips and guidelines for you to follow to help choose one that will be suitable for your boat.

There are some sail covers made of a material called sunbrella, which is a fade resistant, UV resistant, and water repellent canvas. You will need to find a sail cover that has even, straight, tightly sewn seams. Look for a cover with large, easy to pull zippers that are marine grade and recessed. It should also have top quality steel fasteners and reinforced openings as well. When you purchase one, make sure that the thread that is used is UV resistant.

The turn button fasteners that lie along the bottom of sail covers should be no further than two feet apart. Speaking of fasteners, it is not recommended that you rely on Velcro. The loops of it tend to collect dirt, and you will find that it wont take long before your sail cover wont close as tightly as it should. However, the advantage of using Velcro is that it can seal pretty tightly around the mast. If you purchase sail covers that use Velcro closures, keep an eye on the Velcro and be prepared to replace the strips as needed.

Keep in mind that any of the openings for lazy jacks, rigging and lines need to be kept as small as possible because the larger the openings are, the more salt spray, rain and dirt will reach the sails. Your new cover for the mainsail needs to allow access to the main halyard. You do not want the halyard to start slapping the mast, and it can be a real pain to undo the sail cover just to get to the halyard.

By all means, you are going to want a sailcover that is easy to put on. The easier it is to put on, the more likely you will be to use it when you are anchoring. And of course, the more you use it, the longer your sails will last. Finally, try to choose from sail covers that offer chafing protection inside the collar, because it will help protect the cover from cleats, winches and other fixtures on the mast.
