How To Choose The Right Dog Bed For Your Dog
Choosing the right dog bed for your pet can go a long way toward ensuring that he will be both happy and comfortable
. After all, he will be spending a lot of time stretched out either sleeping or relaxing. Wouldn't you rather he did this on his own bed rather than on your couch or bed?
When you're ready to choose a dog bed there are a few things to think about before you buy. Let's take a closer look at some of these things.
It's not as simple as heading down to the big box store and grabbing whatever is available. There is a huge variety of dog beds to choose from, so you'll want to be clear on exactly what you want.
Most important is to choose a bed that will be large enough for your furry friend. Preferably, you should choose a bed that fits the size of your dog. Just as there are large breeds and even miniature breeds, there are also large dog beds and small ones. If for instance, you own a larger breed dog, he won't feel comfortable trying to stretch out on a small bed.
It's not as important if you have a smaller breed dog and decide on a larger bed. Even so there are some breeds that seem to prefer small and cozy, over roomy. Puppies are the exception. If you buy a bed to fit your puppy, be aware that you'll have to buy another bed once he is full grown.
You will also want to think about the material that the bed is covered with. Almost any heavy duty material that will stand up to everyday wear and tear is suitable. Some of the more common choices are fleece or denim.
When you choose a fabric for your pet's bed, think about his breed, the climate you live in, and where you will locate the bed. Larger breed dogs or those with heavy coats will find cotton or canvas to be cooler to lie on. Short haired or smaller dogs may find a material such as fleece to feel warmer.
If you are choosing a bed for your pup to use outdoors, these are important considerations. There is not as much of an issue if your pet's bed is located inside. But even then, temperature should be considered when selecting a suitable bed.
Choose a bed that will fit into whatever space is available. For instance, if your dog spends lots of time in his crate, be sure to get a bed designed for a crate for the best fit. Where space is at a premium, often a corner style bed makes the best use of space.
Regardless of the type of bed you choose, washable dog beds are probably the best option. If the bed itself is not washable, be sure to get a machine washable bed cover for it. That way, you can remove and wash it, to get rid of dirt, fur, and odors.
Perhaps one of the most important things to consider is the age and health of your beloved pet. Younger active dogs need a bed with at least a thin layer of high quality, dense foam. That way the bed will be comfortable while maintaining its shape.
A high quality dog bed is most important for pets that have joint pain, whether as a result of a deteriorating joint or simply old age. Your best option is probably orthopedic dog beds which are manufactured using high density foam similar to that used in orthopedic beds for people. It provides additional joint support so may give your dog some pain relief. Your pet will find it easier to get up from an orthopedic bed because less stress is put on his joints.
These are some of the things you may want to think about when it's time to find a bed for your dog. Choosing the right dog bed for your adult dog or puppy, is one way of ensuring that your favorite furry friend is content and comfy.
