How To Create A Festive Holiday Feeling Outdoors
When the holidays roll around, a lot of homeowners go all out and create a festive winter wonderland all throughout their home
. They may decorate trees, hang garland, display Christmas baubles and religious items and burn holiday scented candles. The second you step foot into their house, there is no doubt what season it is. Unfortunately, as you are approaching their home or leaving, the decorations are nowhere to found and the outside of their home simply looks neglected. If you are going to go all out for the holidays and bring festive style to your home, you should focus inside and out. Start by making sure the outside of your home is safe and all necessary repairs have been made. Contact someone about roof repairs or roof replacement if necessary and take care of all of those nagging projects before hauling out the decorations.
Once you are ready to decorate, take a look at the upcoming weather forecast. Even if it means decorating a little earlier than you would like, try to choose a warmer day to take care of things outside. This is not to say decorations and lights should be hung in September. Usually there is a warm weekend day sometime in November that is perfect for hanging lights and taking care of your exterior decorations.
Instead of just choosing the usual outdoor decorations so your home looks like all the others on the block, do your best to get a little creative with your exterior decor. You can stand out and be different without being tacky. Add wreaths not just to your doors, but also to your windows or the railings in front of your home. If you are hanging lights, accent your home, but also the trees on the property. Have a goal of creating a winter wonderland in the front yard for a display, but do it with class and keep things tidy and neat.
When decorating outdoors, extend the decorating to the ends of your property. If you have a long tree-lined driveway, accent those trees with lights. If you choose white lights, these can be left up and illuminated all year-long. If your property is surrounded by a fence, you can bring the festive spirit to it by adding lights or wreaths. The important thing is to make sure the decorating job does not look half done. Not every inch need to be draped in lights and greenery, but add enough to your home so it looks as if your decorating intentions were well-planned and ambitious.
Finally, remember safety. When hanging lights, make sure you are using a sturdy ladder and that you have someone to help you. Avoid climbing on the roof unless yours has very limited pitch. Check all of the electrical outlets to make sure they are working properly and discard any strings of lights that may have frayed cords or that otherwise appear to be a danger. Creating a festive holiday look for the exterior of your home is easy and fun with a little planning and preparation.
