A typical progression for the latter would be an informal cocktail party on Friday night, when many of the guests may be still arriving or not yet in town; a formal sit-down dinner and dance on Saturday; and a more informal family barbecue on Sunday, when some attendees will be in the process of getting back to their distant homes or already departed.

A mystery guest can add extra appeal to a reunion. If the class has an actual alum who made it big in business or entertainment, that person would be an obvious choice to include. If a highly regarded teacher from the past is available, he or she would probably be a welcome guest. Music from that earlier era especially brings back memories, so recordings or a live band to play it is a fixture of reunions.

Volunteer classmates typically organize reunions. Their tasks include hunting down missing alums, drawing up and maintaining a budget for food, entertainment, and other expenses, collecting their classmates contributions to cover those costs, and engaging entertainers and a renting a space. An enterprising class member may collect newspaper clippings, photos, and other memorabilia into a scrapbook or printed booklet.

A professional reunion planner may make things easier for a particularly large reunion. Such a consultant, like a planner for a business meeting or wedding, can handle the details so everyone else can simply enjoy the festivities. Reunion committees might request the National Association of Reunion Planners, or NARM, to supply contact information for knowledgeable and capable reunion planners in their area.

The Internet has given high school class reunions a massive shot in the arm, both in terms of locating lost classmates and putting the event together. Reunion.com, Classmates.com, and Switchboard.com are among the many websites that have leaped to the task of helping reunion volunteers find their former friends and schoolmates. Reunion organizers then consult such sites as ReunionPlanner.com, MyEvent.coms reunion pages, AlumniClass.com, and CreativeReunions.com for coaching on how to plan and execute the main event.

Still others maintain ongoing websites to assist aging and widely dispersed classmates to stay in touch and informed via the Web. Nowadays, high school class reunions often put participants in touch and keep them informed of developments with a Facebook page.
