How To Create An Ergonomic Workstation

When we start to speak about ergonomics, most people immediately jump to office chairs

and all the ways that this piece of furniture can be altered to foster a healthy posture. One piece of furniture that is rarely discussed but is also vital in ensuring workplace health is the workstation; there are actually a number of ways that this can be constructed ergonomically, ensuring that your employees avoid workplace-related disorders, such as RSI.

There are three areas that should be taken into account when designing a workstation that is considered ergonomic:

Your seating position

Your keyboard and mouse position

Your monitor position

Seating Position

Believe it or not, your office chair actually forms a vital part of your workstation as a whole; you need to make sure that you have chosen one that is comfortable and that promotes healthy posture. It should also encourage good blood circulation and allow your arms to rest comfortably in the typing position. The chair should also possess good lumbar support, which will encourage your spine to maintain its natural S shape.

Keyboard and Mouse Position

When placing your computer on your workstation, you should ensure that both your keyboard and mouse are in a comfortable position for use. They need to be placed at the correct height on top of the workstation your elbows should be resting at your sides with your forearms parallel to the floor. By having the keyboard or mouse flat on the workstation, your wrists may have to bend in uncomfortable directions, which encourages carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS).

Monitor Position

Setting up your computer on your workstations also involves choosing a spot for the monitor. The healthiest position for your monitor is at least two feet away from your person and directly in front of your body. Having the monitor sitting too close on your workstation will make it more difficult for your eyes to clearly read what is on the screen. Just make sure that it is not positioned too far away, as this will cause you to lean forward and strain your neck.

As you can see, there are a number of ways that you can set up your workstation in a way that is completely ergonomic. This will help to ensure that your employees take less sick days (as they will be less prone to developing work-related disorders, like RSI and CTS) and it will also lessen the amount of claims that employees make for said injuries. Remember that what is ergonomic in a workstation for one employee will not be the same as another.
