How To Dance At The Club

If you're not a natural-born dancer, going out to a club and dancing with strangers may be a daunting task for you

. Not to mention that it's overcrowded and noisyway too loud to have a normal conversation. So you're only hope for attracting that cute guy or gal is to make a memorable first impression on the dance floor. Get ready to learn how to dance at the club.

It's not hard to learn how to Club Dance. It doesn't require years of intense training like other dance forms. It is simple and natural. And with a little practice, you will be able to get out on the dance floor with confidence.

So what is Club Dance? Club Dancing is improvising your body movements to the beat of a song.

Let's talk about body movement first. Many people say "I can't move", but that's completely false and based on ignorance. If you can walk, you can move your body. The same way that there is a process to walking - putting one foot in front of the other - there is a process to body movement. It's a two-step process.

The first step is what we call Isolations. Isolations mean moving one part of the body, while keeping the other parts still. This trains our body parts to move independently from each other. For instance, a hip isolation is when we practice moving the hips while keeping the upper torso still. Or a rib cage isolation is when we practice moving the rib cage back and forth while keeping the hips still. You get the point.

Depending on the specific move you do, there may be one or more body part isolations involved, such as in a body wave. So it's important to go slowly and mechanically when first learning. Once you can execute each body part isolation involved in the move, in the proper sequence, you are ready to connect the dots.

The second step of the body movement process is when you connect all the body part isolations together to make one fluid movement. This is called Fluidity. Instead of your body wave looking like four choppy body part isolations, it now looks like one smooth wave motion. This is an exciting point to get to in your dancing. This is what separates natural-looking dancers from awkward-looking dancers.

Now let's talk about staying on the beat. We now know how to move our body. The trick is to moving the body on specific beats of the song. In most songs, there is a consistent beat (or many beats) that continuously repeats. When first learning, focus on finding just one beat. It doesn't matter which beat. Just a beat that stands out to you. Then listen and see if you can hear it repeat - over and over again - like a broken record.

Once you have chosen a beat, let's practice moving our body with it. Let's use the side-to-side step as an example. You step to the side with your right foot (count 1), then tap your left foot next to your right foot without weight (count 2). So it's a step and a tap. Then repeat by stepping to the side with your left foot (count 3), and then tapping your right foot next to your left foot (count 4).

As you do your side-to-side step, find your chosen beat in the music. Match up your "taps" with your beat. So you should hear your beat every time you tap. Continue this throughout the song. Then switch. This time match your chosen beat to your side steps. So your beat and side steps should happen at the exact same time.

You can play around with more movements and beats as you get more advanced. But keep it simple until you are comfortable with the basics.

And finally, let's talk about improvisation. Club Dance is not choreography. Your dancing should be spontaneous and match the "feel" of the song that is playing. A heavy break or accent in the song should elicit a response in your dancing. A stop or pause in the music should elicit a stop or pause in your movement. This is just the basic idea.

To help you become more spontaneous and improvisational in your dancing, put your focus completely on the music. Forget about how you look and allow your body to move freely in any way that the music makes it feel. Don't worry about looking stupid. This is a great practice exercise to help you get out of your head and into the music.

In a nutshell, these are the three basic components to Club Dancing. Good luck practicing!
