How To Deal With Common Technical Seo Issues

If one was to look closely at a random selection of websites out there on the web

the chances are many of them would display a number of common technical issues that affect SEO. The reality is that many of these issues are fairly basic and easily solved however their impact on optimisation can be far greater so therefore such things need to be found and fixed asap.

Multiple Homepage Versions

This can occur across different platforms and will often show up as something like,

www.examplesite.com/home

www.examplesite.com/default.aspx

Search engines nowadays can usually cope with this however in the interests of SEO and best practise its a good idea to rectify this.

Fixing is a simple enough job; first locate the duplicates of the homepage by importing a crawl of the site into CSV and search in the Meta title column.

Once the duplicates are found then use a 301 redirect to point them to the correct homepage.

Using the Wrong Redirects

On the subject of redirects, its crucial to ensure that the correct type of redirect is used. To a visitor a 301 and 302 appears to be one and the same thing however a search engine sees things very differently. A 302 redirect is only viewed as a temporary measure by the search engine and therefore no link equity is passed between the pages. A 301 redirect is permanent and therefore the link equity is passed over.

Solving this issue is again fairly simple; first locate the 302 redirects and then ask your web company to change them to 301 redirects.

Old and Broken Site Maps

It isnt a must but sitemaps are useful for assisting search engines in crawling a website and ensuring they find everything. They literally do provide a map of the site to the crawlers. However most sitemaps will be produced once, at the website launch and then forgotten about and left to become outdated with pages missing and old links pointing to nothingness.

To fix first you need to do an audit of your sitemap and then contact your website developer about fixing the links and ensuring its up to date.

Uppercase and Lowercase URLs

This issue can arise when the server is configured to respond to urls with uppercase letters and not redirect those in lower case. Search engines are getting much better at recognising the canonical version however dont rely on them to get it right every time.

Soft 404 Errors

When a visitor to your website clicks on a page link only to be displayed the HTTP status code error 200 it will be due to some coding that is telling the search engine that the page is working properly and this can result in pages being crawled and indexed that you dont want to be.

To find such errors use Googles own tool in the webmaster suite.
