How To Deal With Separation Anxiety

Around the six to eighteen month period, your baby might start showing signs of 'separation anxiety'

. This article offers some advice on what to look out for and how to deal with the symptoms if they occur.

What is 'separation anxiety'?

'Separation anxiety' is the feelings of distress a baby may feel when separated from it's mother. The baby becomes anxious and may cry or seek attention. It is a normal phase in it's development.

Why does the baby become anxious?

The baby relies on it's mother for survival and comfort. It has reached the age where it recognizes and knows it's mother from others. When it is separated from it's mother it fears it will lose it's safety and security.

How does one cope?

At first it may feel overwhelming. You may feel trapped and unable to complete goals or plans, such as getting back to work, that you had in mind. Do not fret. This is a short term phase that the baby will soon grow out of. Take a deep breath, step back and relax. Try not to be overcome with anger or frustration.

You can help the baby to overcome the feelings by teaching it that just because something is out of sight, it can still be there. When moving around the room, keep talking to your baby so it senses you are still present. Also, playing a game like peek-a-boo can help your baby get used to you disappearing and returning, so it will not be such a new experience when it happens for real. If you have to leave your child with someone else, let your child get to know them whilst in your presence before you leave them alone together.

Do not disappear suddenly, if you have to leave the baby for a period, try and do so gradually.

If your spouse feels rejected, comfort them with the knowledge that it's not personal that the baby wants to stay with it's mother but just a phase that will soon pass.

I hope you have found this article useful and it has helped you increase your awareness about the subject of 'separation anxiety'.
