How To Decorate Your First Home

Is moving into your first home a cumbersome and expensive idea

? Nope.. You can easily make your first home an ideal place to live. You will find various useful and cheap ideas, for home decoration in this article.

Wall Color

If it is within your budget, the initial step after or before you move in, should be a good paint job. Freshly painted walls brighten up the house immediately, and will make even an old and shabby house look brand new. Wall paper is also a good idea. Make sure the paint or the wall paper is in a subtle and pleasant color, so that it does not overwhelm you.

Window Treatment

Having natural light in your apartment or house, is the key to brighten up and make your house look spacious. Also make sure your window blocks off the traffic or any noise. Clean your windows regularly so that more light comes in, and your view is not blocked. So don't be in a hurry to decide on your window furnishings. You can make your own curtains, many stores have a discount section for fabrics, old sheets or blankets that are fairly inexpensive and can easily be turned into curtains. You can trim them to any size you want.

Decorate What You Collect

Do you collect anything? Whether it is sea shells, glass figures, rocks or cheap jewelery, pick out a spot in your house and display all your collections as creatively as possible. This will make that empty space fill out, and you get to show off your precious collections. Whatever it is, make sure it is clean and not cluttered.

Color Appeal

To add extra color and make your apartment lived in, add some pillows and rugs in contrasting, bright colors. Over-sized pillows can even be used as a seating arrangement, where the space is limited.

Pots And Plants

Adding a little greenery to your house, will make a dramatic change. It gives a nice, clean and well looked after impression. Get plants that are easy to maintain, this way you don't need to water them daily, and they add a great effect to your house. The best part is they are affordable, and if you find them boring you can always paint the pots in a variety of colors to make them look exciting.

Live In The Light

Candles can add a pretty glow to your house, and they are inexpensive. Get fragrant candles to make your house smell heavenly. You can even make your own candle holder to add some sparkle to your house. Take a clear drinking class, flip it over and top it up with a clear glass saucer. After you are satisfied with the effect, glue it together. If you want you can roll them in glitter, paint etc, to create the desired effect.

Snap It Up

Take your favorite photo, blow it up and frame it in the living room, to add some personal touches to the walls. You can try the black and white version of the picture, it will make the picture look ethereal and timeless. You can easily buy cheap frames for your photo. Or even make your own. Cut up some cardboard box paper into the desired length, glue it together to make a frame and paint or decorate as you like. Nobody will know the difference. Another idea would be to make a collage of all your friends or relatives and hang it up. It will bring a smile to your face, whenever you see it.

Storage

You can easily find shelves and other storage boxes in any decoration shops. They are often cheap, buy unfinished ones and paint or decorate them for further appeal. Make storage solutions in unexpected places, such as under the bed or under the steps etc.

Buy Cheap

If you go to a garage sale, or second hand shop, you will find a lot of things to decorate your house with. If something catches your eye, and there are minor defects such as the paint peeling off, or it is broken and can be repaired etc; buy it as it will surely be cheap, and repair or clean it yourself. It will not be expensive, and you will have one more thing to decorate your house with.
