How To Decorate Your Home: From Furniture Trends To Gardening Tips

If you're moving into a new home, you get the often delightful but daunting task of figuring out a decorating scheme

. If you're about to take on this project, don't worry: just step back, take a deep breath, and keep these tips in mind:

Ask yourself, do you want the entire apartment to have a theme, or do you want to take it room by room? The former might be easier because you'll only have to be on the lookout for things of a certain aesthetic (nautical, for example, or floral). The latter, though, will give you more room for creativity and probably allow you to incorporate things you already own more easily. Try assigning each room its own color, for example, and paint one of the walls in that room that color. That in itself gives you the freedom of a room-specific theme that at the same time is an apartment-wide theme.

Once you've decided on a theme (or several), take the rooms one at a time.

For the Living Room:

Decide just how much "living" you'll be doing in this room. Some people don't spend hardly any time in their living rooms; if this is going to be the case for you, don't worry about having too much going on in it. Others, though, spend nearly all their time in the living room, in which case you want the room to be as nice as possible.

For the Kitchen:

This may include a little remodeling. Kitchens are one of those rooms that usually aren't exactly what the tenant wants, so a few little tweaks here and there have to be made.

For the Bedroom:

This, the room you sleep in and probably spend a good chunk of time in, should be the most comfortable room in your home, a place where you can drift off to sleep with ease. Think about what kind of atmosphere you feel the most comfortable in and find a way to apply that sense of comfort to your bedroom.

For the Bathroom:

Bathrooms usually end up being the sparsest rooms in a home, in terms of decorating. The reasons people spend time in a bathroom are limited, and usually have nothing to do with admiring the decor. You can certainly put a little less into decorating the bathroom, but don't neglect it entirely. It is still a room in your home, and will disrupt the theme if too bland.

For the Hallways/Entryways:

Like bathrooms, hallways and entryways often are neglected. This is a mistake, particularly when it comes to entryways. Whatever is there is the first thing you're going to see when you arrive home, so why not add a nice painting or photograph, maybe some flowers?

Before you start buying anything, check out some interior design magazines. Seeing what other people have done with their homes will help you spark ideas of your own. Look into furniture trends and general interior design trends, and figure out what you like.
