How To Develop Public Speaking and Presentation Skills

Have you ever wondered what's causing your phobia of public speaking? Well, there are a few good reasons, one of which is the lack of public speaking and presentation skills. Lacking such skills makes it generally hard for one to stand up in public and present.

Public speaking and presentation skills can be developed and improved quite easily. It doesn't take that long to practice and mostly what you require is motivation.

You first need to realise the basis for development, and that is preparation. Outlined below are some general ways to help boost your public speaking and presentation skills:

Structure: First of all plan your presentation. Know what you will say in the beginning, middle and end. Think about your introduction. Your intro should be short and create anticipation for you and your subject theme. Your ending should be tantamount to the beginning. The conclusion should be short and powerful. It should leave your audience mesmerised after your presentation. You could even end it using a Q/A session, but always make sure you go back to your original point and purpose.

Words: If you are going to give out a fact, use figure and stats to promote the validity of your claim, i.e. "65% of customers prefer to use the alternative brand." Try to avoid phrases such as "Do you follow?" Such words can imply to your audience that they do not understand what you are saying.

Voice: Speaking loudly and clearly portrays confidence. It is wise to increase the volume of your voice in the beginning of your presentation. This will most likely captivate attention from the audience.

Gestures: This plays a significant part in developing public speaking and presentation skills. Gestures are a way to convey passion. The audience can be thought as your mirror. If you feel uncomfortable and un-relaxed, so will your audience. Try to use open gestures. Don't try to hide yourself by using your hands, but keep palms open and you legs parallel.

These are just some ways to improve the quality of your public speaking and presentation skills. There are of course loads of other ways, but here we have outlined some of the fundamentals.

Watch out for future articles on the subject and I hope you become well on your way to great success!
